Welcome to the Department of Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery, Children's Health Ireland, at Crumlin. The Hospital is the National Centre for Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery in Ireland. This department serves as a unit for the diagnosis and treatment of all aspects of paediatric congenital heart and lung disease across Ireland. These two large departments (cardiology and cardiac surgery) work hand in hand to provide a patient and family centred service for infants and children with heart disease. The unit benchmarks itself against the highest international medical and ethical standards, and is regarded as one of the busier paediatric cardiac centres in these islands.

Ranging from fetal cardiac care right through to the care of children up to the age of 16, our patient-centred services are managed by expert medical, surgical, and health professional teams. There are strong links with the Dublin maternity hospitals, and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for the combined management of patients at either end of the age spectrum. Satellite cardiology clinics are held in the Children’s University Hospital Temple Street, the National Children’s Hospital Tallaght, Cork University Hospital (Sligo, Limerick).

The Cardiac team consists of 9 consultant paediatric cardiologists and 3 consultant cardiothoracic surgeons, with a further 9 non consultant doctors. The nature of congenital heart disease and its treatment requires a large multi-disciplinary team (MDT). The MDT team includes nurses, clinical nurse specialists, advanced nurse practitioner, advanced nurse pracitioner candidates, health care assistants, anesthesiologists, intensivists, psychologists, social workers, physiotherapists, clinical nutritionists, a pharmacist, play specialist, spiritual councillors, household staff and a large administrative team.

Please click on Meet the Cardiac Team to find brief descriptions of the clinical and non-clinical teams that will be providing your child’s care during their visit to our cardiac department.
