Welcome to the website of the Department of Clinical Genetics at Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin. On this website you will find out about our clinical and laboratory services, how to access clinic appointments, how to request a laboratory genetic test, information on our clinics and the nature of our service. There are over 70 staff working in the department, comprising of Consultant Clinical Geneticists, Genetic Counsellors, Scientists and administrative support staff. We offer a wide-ranging clinical and laboratory service, embracing both paediatric and adult genetic disorders.

Appointments are available by referral only – this may be from another Consultant, or from your Family Doctor. There is a waiting list. Non urgent cases can wait up to 2 years for an appointment. However, urgent cases are dealt with in an appropriately timely manner.

We are delighted to announce the appointment of 2 new Consultant Clinical Geneticist posts in 2020, which should help us make a considerable impact on the current waiting list. Additionally Children’s Health Ireland has prioritised the advancement of genetic services in a very positive way, which is directly impacting on patient care, resulting in more frequent clinics, better laboratory access for clinicians seeing patients and faster turnaround of tests from our laboratory.

There are many new developments in Clinical Genetics, new tests, new conditions being diagnosed, new approaches to investigation. Increasingly genetic tests are being undertaken in non-genetic clinics. While patients in our care are the main focus of our attention, we regularly meet colleagues in other disciplines and offer assistance with genetic tests they might undertake. These patients sometimes end up coming to a Clinical Genetics appointment. This is simply a reflection of the special expertise which the application of these complex investigations can require.

We hope you find our website informative and assure you of our strong commitment to patient focused care and to addressing the anxieties and concerns which are inevitable in seeking a Clinical Genetics consultation.
