The National Paediatric Allogeneic Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) and Cellular Therapy (CT) Unit is located at Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) Crumlin. The HSCT Unit provides a range of varying-intensity transplant procedures for children with serious and potentially fatal conditions. Conditions we treat include leukaemia, bone marrow failure and autoimmune or immune dysregulatory diseases.
Additionally, we coordinate referrals to UK Specialist Paediatric Transplant Centres for patients with inherited metabolic disorders, inborn errors of immunity and haemoglobinopathies. The Unit now also provides a new specialised treatment known as Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy for difficult-to-cure leukaemia.

Note in the event of any acute illness where you cannot make contact with the HSCT ward/staff you should bring your child to your closest paediatric emergency department and transfer to CHI at Crumlin will be organised as appropriate.

St Johns BMT ward is located on the ground floor of the hospital, at the far end from the emergency department
the HSCT and CT ward is an annex attached to St John’s main ward. It has four single, rooms which are specially adapted rooms to protect children from infection while their immunity is lowered during allogeneic transplant.
The HSCT day ward and St Johns day ward are located adjacent to St Johns inpatient ward
The HSCT day ward runs an ambulatory nursing and medical planning and review service caring for children and their families pre and post HSCT and CAR T cell therapy
Children may also attend St John’s day ward for procedures such as bone marrow examinations, lumbar punctures, or infusions of certain medications (such as intravenous immunoglobulin), blood products, or chemotherapy if required pre and post-HSCT or CAR T cell therapy

Oncology Outpatients HOOPs’ clinic provides an out-patient based service to co-ordinate the monitoring of children’s health after HSCT and CAR T cell therapy

General information
As a tertiary care hospital, all children who attend CHI must be referred via local hospital consultants, community paediatricians or, in exceptional circumstances, via a GP.

Please ask your local hospital medical team to contact the haematology/HSCT team via main hospital switch +353 (0)1 409 6100 in CHI at Crumlin to coordinate medical care and transfer as necessary who have specialised complex needs. There is a medical doctor available 24/7 to answer such emergency calls.
We have a shared care policy with established protocols for initiation of care with local paediatric departments.
