LE Eithne hosts Fun Day for OLHSC Children & Families

All Aboard the LE Eithne

Patients attending Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children Crumlin enjoyed another Fun Day on board the Irish Navy Vessel LE Eithne today (Wednesday 11^th May 2005).  The special occasion marks the official twinning arrangement made in February 2005 of the LE Eithne with Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children.  

Commander Mark Mellett and the ship's company entertained the children of Our Lady's with a tour of the ship and lunch at the Captain's table.  The children were greatly impressed with the communication technology on board.  They learned about sea rescue operations including the role of specialised divers.

The Captain and ship's crew surprised the children on the wards back at the hospital with a special visit later in the afternoon. 

"The children had a fabulous day today" said Gerry O'Dwyer, Chief Executive.  "We thank the Irish Navy for their ongoing generous support to the hospital.  They have provided great excitement for our sick children."

Geraldine Regan, Director of Nursing said that the ongoing commitment by the naval personnel and recruit classes in helping out children's wards around the country was greatly appreciated. 

"This twinning arrangement incorporates special fun days for sick children and families on board the LE Eithne and will assist in fundraising activities in aid of the Hospital", said Commander Mark Mellett.  "Our Lady's Hospital is a national referral centre for sick children and we invite all families attending Crumlin Hospital on board, wherever we dock in Ireland."
